At death a person abandons
what he construes as mine.
Realizing this, the wise
shouldn’t incline
to be devoted to mine.
He is not noble who injures living beings.
He is called “noble” because
he is harmless towards all living beings.
Just as a solid rock is not shaken by the storm,
even so the wise are not affected by praise or blame.
There are those who do not realize
that one day we all must die.
But those who do realize this
settle their quarrels.
A person with good eyes,
encountering a treacherous, uneven place, would try hard to avoid it.
A wise person, in the world of life,
should avoid evil deeds.
